First of all there was the Netcraft survey. It's very well done technically, and it measures the whole Internet (all domain names, all hosts, etc). It shows clearly a 70/20 % market share ratio between Apache (going up) and IIS (going down). You can find the latest report at Netcraft Webserver Survey Then I read complaints about it in various press sources, all referencing a survey done by the company "Port80" and producing different results. That famous "survey" is located at http://www.port80software.com/surveys/top1000webservers/ This report shows IIS as having 54% market share and Apache only 21%. How come ? Easy. That's because Port80software, who is a Microsoft Certified Partner located in San Diego (California, USA) and which sells software dedicated to IIS ("Port80 Software Web Server Modules for Microsoft IIS") and even proclaim that it's software division has "one focus: Microsoft IIS", restricted its panel to "US Fortune 1000 companies". That's very restrictive (interesting also, in a niche market perspective, but restrictive in a global market view). First, being in the Top-1000 richest doesn't imply you're in the Top-1000 brightest ;-) so your technical choices may not be more appropriate than others'. I would even point out that trusting Microsoft for your portal's security is likely to prove my point ;-) Secondly, big companies have usually a lot more than one webserver in their internal systems. What surveys see is the portal or extranet server. Internally, the situation may very well be totally inversed (like in here, with our two only IIS as portals and a lot of Apaches inside on the Intranet, despite how irrational this is given the different "hackingness" of the two ;-) Thirdly, limiting yourself to the US market is partial and partly, because of the "NIH syndrom" (Not Invented Here). Apache is not an "American product". Microsoft IIS is. I thus decided to conduct my own survey for other parts of the world, and other criteria than "Fortune 1000". I wanted to measure what anybody could measure, in real life. What's important is that the websites people USE are fast & stable, not that some Fortune-1000 company has an IIS-powered site which nobody visits. 1) My first idea was to use the major european cities according to the "European Cities Monitor" of Cushman & Wakefield. Namely in 2004 : Londres ok Thus I used 5 of the top-9 cities of Europe being the most attractive for business. I wrote a database and robot script which gets all webserver details (OS and version, webserver and version, modules installed, scripting engine used and version) for a variety of general-interest sites, that is official sites for : the city itself, its airports, its museums, its transportation means, tourist information, its universities, its fire department, its police, its development agency and its stock exchange. The results on 33 sites were : Webservers Apache 17 51.5 % IIS 11 33.3 % Others 3 9.1 % Unknown 2 6.1 % OSes linux, *nix 15 45.5 % Windows 11 33.3 % (how surprising ;-) Others 1 3.0 % Unknown 6 18.2 % so there is already a significative amount of sites we couldn't determine the platform of. Scripting Engines pure HTML or hidden 17 51.5 % so for more than half of the panel we couldn't get the actual language used to produce the pages. PHP 7 21.2 % ASP.Net 4 12.1 % ASP 2 6.1 % JSP 2 6.1 % CGI 1 3.0 % Over time, this report on "main cities" will be enriched with world's major cities and other criteria. That report is about what REAL people REALLY use and REALLY see on HIGHLY TRAFFICKED servers under HEAVY LOAD. I'm not sure any one of the "Top-1000 US Fortune" websites get as many hits per hour as the Louvre Museum's site in France ;-) 2) Then I applied the same idea as Port80software (top US companies) to the top French companies. This is because there was an easy way of getting their list and relatively easy a manner of getting their website's URI for analysis. I used two lists, one from the MEDEF / CIGREF (regrouping the biggest companies using Internet) , and the other one being the more specific list of "Internet contents providers" (GESTE). Examples of the first CIGREF list include Air France, Alcatel, Alstom, Amadeus, Arcelor, Ariane Espace, Bouygues, Carrefour, Danone, Dassault, EDF, Euronext, Lagardère, LVMH, Michelin, Nestlé, Pinaud-Printemps-Redoute, PSA, Renault, Thalès, Total, Valeo... Examples from the second GESTE list include Atos Origin, Bayard presse, Canal Satellite, CNET France, France Telecom, France Television, Google, Investir, l'Express, le Figaro, le Monde, les Echos, Libération, M6, Prisma Presse, Télérama, T-Online, Wanadoo... This time, the number of sites went up to 248 and here are the results : Web Server Count % Apache 134 54.03 IIS 70 28.23 % it's clear that the more companies you survey, the less they are using IIS Others 32 12.90 Unknown 12 4.84 OS Platform Count % Win 71 28.63 Linux 19 7.66 ] + Other *nix 59 23.79 ] = 31.45 % Unknown 99 39.92 there are too many servers we couldn't get the platform of, and probably most of them are not Windows machines. Too bad. I will research soon the means to enhance the platform detection. Script Engine Count % PHP 60 24.19 it's clear PHP is used by big companies more than two times more frequently than any of its challengers. Others 34 13.71 ASP.Net 29 11.69 Unknown (static 125 50.40 % same remark as for OS platform. or hidden) Conclusion Of course, I'm not Netcraft and I don't analyse 59,100,880 sites per month ;-) but on the other hand the more targetted the survey is, the more interesting its results are, given no bias is introduced in selecting the panel's entities. In here, I performed no selection at all. Now, I can tell with some confidence that the biggest French companies have a totally different profile from the "Top-1000 US Fortune using Microsoft and prospects of Port80software.com" ones. Their open-minded approach of building and powering a portal under heavy load and traffic seems more daily-practice-oriented, or their engineers are better trained. As explained in the 2003 article http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2003/08/30/php_growing_surprisingly_strongly_on_windows.html there is a surprising good presence of PHP on Windows (with Apache or IIS as webserver). The Netcraft article states that "Enterprise sites which use PHP on Windows include Nokia, Valero, Sony and Electronic Arts.". Well, I can already add two : COFINOGA (http://www.cofinoga.fr/) and MADE IN B (http://www.madeinb.fr/) the latter being an IIS 5.0 running PHP 4.3.0RC2 ... The 54/28 market share ratio between Apache and IIS is closer to the overall-Internet measurement (70/20) than port80software on its strangely-chosen panel (21/54). For OSes and Platforms : For running corporate webservers, linux and other unixes have a slight advantage over the various Windows, but the overall ratio is near 50/50. The difference in the favour of the unixes could very well be augmented by determining what powers 40% of the servers that are still "unknown". For Scripting engines & languages : I couldn't determine the scripting engine used in 50% of the cases, but I will be working on it. The figures for the other 50% are pretty clear : PHP : no surprise. It's used by big companies more than two times more frequently than any of its challengers. JSP : with its 4% market share of biggest companies & organizations, I'm not sure the prediction of Netcraft on April 2003 is still valid (this link ;-) "Although JSP has a tiny fraction of the installed base of PHP and ASP, and numbers of specialist servlet web servers are completely dwarfed by Apache and Microsoft-IIS, Java related technology has a much bigger impact on the Web than the raw site numbers suggest. Over the last year JSP has been the fastest growing scripting technology after ASP.NET. JSP sites are often bigger, more complex, and better funded and run by larger organisations than sites using the more common scripting technologies." It has even still less corporate sites than the old & outdated ASP (which has still more than 6%) ASP.Net : it's too bad for its 11.7 % market share that it's linked to a webserver that goes down to the 20% mark ;-) Here are the biggest companies that use ASP.Net : AUTOROUTES DU SUD DE LA FRANCE | http://www.asf.fr/ BNP PARIBAS | http://www.bnpparibas.com/ CIE de SAINT-GOBAIN | http://www.amrae.asso.fr/lesrencontres/strasbourg-2003/societesparticipantesstrasbourg.html CNCE | http://www.groupe.caisse-epargne.com/asp/ci_modele2.asp?np=cnce_accueil_ri_ci&nv=20040303104 LVMH | http://www.lvmh.fr/ L'OREAL | http://www.loreal.com/_en/_ww/index.aspx NESTLE | http://www.nestle.fr/ PINAULT PRINTEMPS REDOUTE | http://www.pprgroup.com/ RADIO FRANCE INTERNATIONALE | http://www.rfi.fr Here are the biggest companies that use PHP : ALTADIS | http://www.altadis.com/ AP-HP | http://www.aphp.fr/ ARCELOR | http://www.arcelor.com/ ARIANE ESPACE | http://www.arianespace.com/ CANAL SATELLITE | http://www.canalsatellite.fr CEGETEL SI | http://www.planisware.com/fr/pr_cegetel_fr.php CNES | http://www.cnes.fr/ CNRS | http://www.cnrs.fr/ COFINOGA | http://www.cofinoga.fr/ DASSAULT AVIATION | http://www.dassault.fr/ EDF | http://www.edf.fr/ EXPLORIMMO | http://www.explorimmo.com FRANCE 3 | http://www.france3.fr FRANCE TELECOM | http://www.francetelecom.fr GAZ DE FRANCE | http://www.gazdefrance.com/ Gie AGIRC ARRCO | http://www.observatoire-retraites.org/observatoire/rubriques/dossiers/Dossiers_ay/creation_gie.htm GROUPE REVUE FIDUCIAIRE | http://www.grouperf.com GROUPE TESTS | http://www.01net.fr GROUPE CAISSE DES DEPÈTS | http://www.caissedesdepots.fr/ INFOTRAFIC | http://www.infotrafic.com L'ARGUS DE LA PRESSE | http://www.argus-presse.fr L'EUROPEENNE DE DONNEES | http://www.edd.fr LE FIGARO | http://www.lefigaro.fr LE NOUVEL OBS | http://www.nouvelobs.com LES ECHOS | http://www.lesechos.fr LIBERATION | http://www.liberation.fr M6 | http://www.m6.fr MCM | http://www.mcm.fr MEDEF entreprises syndicate | http://www.medef.fr/staging/site/page.php MEDIAMETRIE | http://www.mediametrie.fr METROPOLE TELEVISION | http://www.m6.fr/ PRISMA PRESSE INTERACTIVE | http://www.prisma-presse.com RADIO FRANCE | http://www.radiofrance.fr/ SNECMA | http://www.snecma.com/fr/group/index.php T-ONLINE FRANCE | http://www.t-online.fr TECHNIP | http://www.technip.com/ TELEFUN/SKYROCK | http://www.skyrock.com UNEDIC | http://www.assedic.fr/ |

| I think that there is a big uprise in the movement of disguising the servers, OS and scripting engines and giving away as few information as possible. A lot of servers just tell "apache", when they don't simply put funny names in stead ;-) (like 'unedic', 'tracteur-diesel', 'http server' or 'noyb') The only sure conclusions are that IIS lost 2,5% market share in the past year (now near the 25% mark which is inline with the 20,5% measured by Netcraft) and that PHP still has at least twice as many "big companies' web sites" than ASP.Net The analysis of the "other/unknown" can be done (in-depth analysis or fingerprinting) but I lack time to do so. See you next year ;-) |

| okay, first with 32% hidden webservers, 55% unknown OS platforms and 59% hidden script engine (or no scripting engine at all), I reproduce for the last time the original data. I will only use and comment the data on "known" software. For webservers, Apache still gains ground, IIS is down 1% market share (at less than 28%) for the second consecutive year. This is in line with current global trends. For OSes, Windows loses ground (2% market share) in the webservers area for the second consecutive year (at 43%) ; linux and unix flavours are the winners so far. For Scripting engines, the lessons are : - PHP gains ground and now powers more than 50% of the big companies' web sites. - ASP.Net loses 3.5% market share (at less than 22%) ; is Microsoft still ruling the world ? - ASP is still not dead (CGI is) at less than 9% market share ; dire fanatics ;-) - Java is still very weak at 2% market share ; it never took off. - JSP is not dead either but is now under 5.5% market share ; it must have some afficionados. - Domino seems to rise a bit and will be surveyed separately from now on. Given 43% of the webservers run on Windows and 22% run ASP.Net while less than 28% run IIS, I conclude that a lot of webmasters are running Apache and PHP over their Windows box ;-) |

| short summary : in slightly more than one year, for known web servers, Apache lost 0,31% market share (at 53,41%) while IIS lost -2,78% (at 24,90%) This -2,78% is in line with the loss of Windows as a web server OS (-3,02% market share, at 40,38%) Of course, unix/*nix/linux gained those +3,02% (at 59,62%). As for web servers' "languages", in short PHP still runs over 50% of the total while ASP.Net loses -2,53% market share (at 19,38%), ASP continues to lose ground as the same pace as Windows loses ground (-2,53%) and surprisingly JSP appears now on 10% of the total. Java is slightly gaining ground at 2,50 % market share (from 2,05%) , and Domino loses those 0,48% to establish its market share at 5% (from 5,48%) |
